Thanks so much to our wonderful committee for once again, putting together a fun filled weekend for all.  Nice to see everyone and see faces that were not there last year. I feel so blessed to have such a wonderful group of friends after all these years.  It would not happen without all the hard work of Cindy, Larry, Joyce, Gary, Leslie, Jim (and others) that so faithfully get together each year to pull this off for all of us.  Thanks so much.  You are all priceless to us.  I know there were some people there on Friday that I missed because I arrived so late, hope to see you next year.  Looking forward to the get together of 2010.  Take care my friends.  Hugs to all

Norma Shull,

As you are seeing we had a really great time.  It was great seeing everyone and we hope you guys that were there enjoyed yourself, sounds like you did and we are very glad  you did.  We really missed all of you that could not attend it was so much fun.  The comment was made if you come every year you will eventually see everyone .   I had a wonderful time catching up and  laughing myself  to death at the funnies.  I am looking forward to next years gathering.  We had two broken legs there dancing in their chairs hahhaha and we hope they are up and going before long.    We welcome you comments, we love these things and want you to enjoy yourselves.

We were however sadden to hear about Jill Sandidge and we are all Praying for her quick recovery.

Talk more later and see ya next year

 Love to all

As you can tell from the emails going back and forth we had a great time. To those that couldn't make it you were missed. I am not sure who was on the committee but our deepest thanks to all of you for the time and effort you spent to make this a nice "get together." It was wonderful seeing all of you and next year will be even better, if that is possible.

I am in the process of marketing my business, yet again, and would invite you to Facebook to see my new page for "Rejuvenations Inc." There is no charge for Facebook and believe me I have had fun connecting with a lot of folks that I thought I would never find. You can type someones name in the search area at the top right on the page and see if they use Facebook, if so go say hi. While your there, type in Rejuvenations Inc. and see some of the before and and after pictures of a few homes I have had the privilege of helping. If you know of some one that might be in need of my services feel free to let them see it as well. These days it's not what you know but who you know that can help build business. Thanks. Bill thanks you so much for the referal, I hope to be in touch with them soon.

We want to continue to keep Jill in our prayers and hope for a speedy recovery, she's a great lady. Drema will I am sure keep us informed of her progress.

I hope to see you guys again next year and as I told Joyce I am here to help, just ask. Glenn, were looking forward to more pictures. I will send another email with a link to the ones I took as well.

Dearest Wayne (especially) and all,

I will take "Drema sure can talk" as a compliment of the highest grade since it comes with much love (I am sure) from the "mouth of the south" ,yourself!!!!!!!

Love the pics of Pauline even though I am disappointed you did not choose a distinctive name like mine!  Or SheWayne!!

I really enjoyed the weekend even though at my age I am thoroughly worn out!

And please, before next year, remember I am not anyone's conscience, a preacher, or a total prude.  I have lots of fun in my own way  ---  but I really may take dance lessons before next year!!!! Melanie offered ballet.  What do think?  Should I give it a whirl!!!!

I really had a blast and loved seeing everyone and my THANKS also to the entire planing team. Good job.
Love to y'all!
Drema

Well, I can certainly tell that I missed a wonderful gathering.  I was so sorry to miss everyone, but have not been this sick for quite some time.  Don’t have migraines very often, and when I do, they are usually over in about 24 hours, but this one stayed with me for a very long time and I just couldn’t get myself together enough to come and visit with everyone.  However, I am glad to get the video and although Wayne’s partner was a little on the “leggy” side, he did marvelously well and get’s a “10”.  My very best wishes to everyone and I am so sorry to have missed you all.

Dear PHS Friends,

Your prayers are urgently needed for Sharon Gemmell, Class of '66.

Sharon has got a terrible infection in her leg. They may have to remove her leg. Other the big complication is that her air passage is so scarred from being on a ventilator for weeks and months at a time in the past and the opening is the size of a pencil. If they put her on a ventilator for surgery on her leg they may not be able to remove it.

Please pray for healing for Sharon.

Also, please keep in your prayers the family of Roy Myers, Class of '62 who passed away this week.
Roy S. Myers (06-04-2009)
Roy S. Myers of Midlothian, Va. died May 27 of Lou Gehrig's disease. He was born Dec. 16, 1942 in Pulaski. Roy was the son of Jesse S. Myers and Lilly Surratt Myers. He was a graduate of Pulaski High School. Roy was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife Faye, and three sons Rocky, Greg and Shawn; as well as four granddaughters. Roy was retired from DuPont in Richmond. It was his request to be cremated.

In God's Name we pray. Amen

Good afternoon to all, hope everyone is well and happy.

I got several inquiries yesterday from Wayne Hodges about our upcoming event. Evidently I have not been clear on our schedule of upcoming events. Also I have had several request for who is coming. I cannot tell you that exactly. This is so informal. I am going to try and list who have responded with yes and planning on it. That will be the last thing at the end of this. Please If I add someone that is not coming or leave someone off that is I apologize. I feel I let everyone down by not keeping a list. But when we do not have to account for money, buy stuff etc. we are not so good at bookkeeping and Joyce is our banker and better at it than I am.

What I want to make sure everyone understands is all events are at the Elks Club, downtown Pulaski.

Friday Afternoon

Meet and Greet Friday from 6 until when ever. Ordering Pizza, but you can bring a snack if you wish. Please bring your drink. Ice and cups provided

Saturday afternoon:

Social from 2 until 6.

Pot Luck Dinner at 6 and Social after dinner bring and dish and drink. Hot dogs provided if you don’t do hot dogs bring what you wish

Golf : Contact Jim Kelly

Some of us are planning on attending Claytor Lake Festival Saturday Morning Meet at the beach area sit and visit or take in the crafts your choice.

Ok now if some of you ladies wish to play, (no ladies have expressed interest to me), hopefully you have contacted Jim Kelly if you wish to play he is handling tee times etc. I have not played in years, no clubs even now , my health will not allow me 9 holes.

The motel rates: I have a range from $79-$84 depends on how many we get. Right now I count 4 or 5 rooms so I believe it will be $79 a night. AARP rate Glenn is $94 hahahhahah.

If I can get the exact # I will confirm the rate on Tuesday. Bill we do have confirmation you are booked there, will get the reduced rate if we get enough to qualify for the reduced rate.

Now I have to cut this very short, I have been summons to a meeting in about 10 minutes , plus leaving early for the holiday.

This is off the top of my head, I know I may have added a tentative one and left a positive one off. But we are planning on a great turn out. So many cannot commit until the last moment. I am gong to make a list next time. I am just not organized enough. I never thought about needing one.

When:  June 12 & 13th

 WHERE: Pulaski Elks Club

This year we are going to do a Meet and Greet on Friday night at the Elks Club from 6:00 P.M. until when ever. Bring your own snack food and drink and join us.  We will be sending out for pizza.

Then Saturday we will be meeting for a Social from 2 p.m.  Until approx 6 p.m.   Then a pot luck dinner   Then socialize the rest of the evening.

Larry Gilmore will be providing hot dogs for our pot luck.  If hot dogs are not your thing then bring what you wish and a side dish or just bring a side dish.  Paper products and condiments will be provided by Larry also.  Please bring your drink of choice.   We understand some of you travelers have a hard time with dishes, chips or anything is fine.

This is a casual event.  No muss no fuss.  We will be there.  So come to all of just what you can.  We understand sometimes you cannot make everything.  We just want to see as many people as we can

It is only 4 weeks away if you know you are coming and have not responded please do so now so we can have a ball park for the dogs. If you have responded to the positive we have you down.

Please do not hesitate to come if you did not notify us.  We will have plenty of food and we understand sometimes you cannot make a decision until the last minute.  We are having a great response and we are going to miss those of you that cannot make it.  Again very informal and we will have plenty of food.

The guys are looking to have a golf game, so contact Jim Kelly he is helping get that together (see e-mail below)  I think some of us that do not do golf  are going to take in the Claytor Lake festival Saturday morning  if anyone is interested let me know.

We have already had several tell us they are making plans on being there.    Danny Phillips from Texas, Bill Flint from Indiana,  Kelly Schrader, Wayne Hodges & Pete Rakes  from Carolina. Sharon Davis, (GEORGIA?)  We have many from Roanoke, Charlottesville, Richmond and other areas of Virginia to the positive.  Linda Rupe Pittman, Margaret Sage Guy, Glenn Stone, Norma Shull, many Pulaski/Dublin to the positive so it sounds great  there are  many more that I cannot add. No room unless I go 3 or 4 pages hahahah

One thing I do not have is spouses or friends coming with you, let us know if they are coming for the food count.

Call an old high school buddy and meet us there. !!    We are the best under Heaven the Class of 67!!!!!!

Mona sent me a message on Classmates but she was no longer a member when I saw it 6-8 weeks later and I could not contact her as I do not know married name?  I left a phone message at home of 64 class or Reunion president named Ed in Northern VA, but I have lost the message and phone number .

If you could get this message to someone in class of 1964 that may have addresses or contacts, I would appreciate.  Mona was a friend of my brother and I in Jr. High in Greenville, MS when I was 12-13 years old.

Hello All,

Hope everyone is doing well. Let me hear from some of you.

The reunion committee needs to hear from you guys on the 2nd weekend in June.  We want to have as many people in attendance as possible.  We had said at our last gathering we would make the 2nd weekend the Class of 67 week.

Is this weekend still ok with everyone? Just give me a maybe if you might can still make it.  There is never going to be a time that everyone can make it.  I was just trying to see how many of us are still on board for that weekend.

Venue is undetermined at this point.  We are working on it.  Had our first meeting, should no something more difinite in a couple weeks.  If this weekend is good and you are planning on still coming let me know.  This is not a commitment, none can do that.  This is a feel we need to get before we proceed with plans for the gathering.

We are welcoming ideas of what you would like to do.  Don’t forget now this is a pot luck type event when making suggestions.  We may can pursuade Larry and crew to do the dogs again.

let me get a preliminary head count.  Cindy.Fanning@EaglePicher.com

thanks

Cindy

I just sent an e-mail requesting Prayers for Joyce Gray’s brother-in-law, Mike.  The Dear sweet guy passed this morning early.  Mike has 3 lovely daughters and a brother, Mother and Julie and the rest of this family.  I am an extended family member in that family.  Mike was a quiet soft spoken guy and lots of fun and left us way to soon.

Please keep them in your Prayers.

Hey Folks,
I have a correction of my email this morning.....Magic Moments web site is this  www.magicmomentsband.net

Also, has anyone gotten an update on Sonny Cain?  Many people have asked and I don't have anything to tell them.

Have a prayer request from Rudy Rash, Class of 74 who really needs our prayers.  Rudy writes:

Prayer request:

I have another (2nd) spinal tap, a.k.a. lumbar puncture, scheduled for this Tuesday, February 17th at Roanoke Memorial Hospital to determine the spinal fluid pressure in my nervous system, especially  around my optic nerves, to see if my MS is affecting my vision.  The docs are also planning to examine the spinal fluid and my blood for any changes in MS factors.  MS induced vision problems can lead to blindness so I'm asking everyone to pray that the tests find my spinal and brain fluid pressure to be normal and that the MS is not affecting my vision.

Unfortunately, since I was last on here I fell down the steps in my house when my legs decided to quit leading to a painful but fixable spinal compression injury known as spinal stenosis.  After 9 months of physical therapy I'm proud to announce that I've given rebirth to my ability to walk!!  (Gota keep a sense of humor in these situations).  Now that I am able to walk with a cane I hope to resume my voyage to Johns Hopkins for both MS and rheumatoid arthritis evaluation and treatment recommendations.  Speaking of humor I've invented a new name in honor of my two illness (MS and arthritis):   Ms. Arthur, she's one b-t-h that you definately don't want moving in with you.  I better end my humor at this point, after all this is a prayer request.

Rudy Rash '74
Never give up, never surrender, never lay down and never ever not get up.

Thank goodness for the power of prayer and for all our PHS friends who are praying.

Peace,  Jill

I just received another prayer request.
Jill,
Would you also add Darnell Mitchell, husband of Virginia Grubb Mitchell, class of '68 to our high school prayer list. He had cancer surgery on Jan. 25. Had a real tough time and has not shown too much progress, although, he is at home now. Plus, I was already disabled from work injuries, and I was rear ended in a MVA last Friday afternoon coming home from Roanoke Hospital, where I had been sitting with my husband all week. The impact just shook me up a little and re-injured my previous problems. So far, I am getting along as well as can be expected.
God is good all the time and I know He is watching over me!  Thanks!
Love, Prayer and Peace,
Virginia G. Mitchell

Our prayers are with you and Darnell, Virginia.

Hey Folks, I just heard from Carol Sandra Blevins Wendt, Class of '68 with some sad news.

Carol writes:

My sister (Evelyn Juanita Trail Wilson) went by Judy Trail Wilson died today. She was a graduate of PHS 1958.

She lived in Salem Virgina. She worked at Roanoke Memorial Hospital until retiring. She also was a nurse at Pulaski Hospital until moving to Salem.

Hey PHS Friends,

I am so pleased that it has warmed up.  Last Sat. it was minus 5 in my front yard.  Brrrr.  I expect some of you were even colder.  I have to admit I wouldn't mind one nice snow but then I am ready for spring!!!

I heard from Earl East, Class of '56.  Earl writes
Hi Jill, I just wanted to plug Jerry Ratcliffe's book which is now out in all of it's glory. It was difficult to come by in the Charlottesville area this Christmas. I understand that Barnes & Noble ran out a couple of times. It can be ordered from Amazon as this shows. Also I understand Sam's Club and Walmart carry it. Jerry is quiet and shy guy and will not plug it shamelessly as I will. lol Check this link. I gave it to my daughter and son in law who graduated from UVa in the early nintires and they love it or say they do any way. I believe Jerry graduated in the class of '68.

I trust you are well and I read the book Mr. White put out and passed it on the my brothers Jim and Doug.  Be well and you are the current "Lou writes Jane" if you remember that column in the Southwest Times many years ago.

Jerry Ratcliffe is a PHS grad...Class of '68.

We were sorry to read of the passing of June Ryan Bell, Class of '56.  Our prayers are with her family.
We also offer our sympathies to
Larry Rogers (Class of 68) whose mother passed away the end of Nov.

It was grand to see so many of you at the Pulaski Theatre events over Christmas.  Your support has been wonderful.  We have two events scheduled that we want you to know about.  The first is this Sat.  Greg McDougal is a singer/songwriter from Nashville.  After his first child was born with cystic fibrosis he left the music business.  Now after 4 children...3 with CF he has come back to the business...singing Christian Country music.  Check him out and listen to some of his music at http://www.myspace.com/gregmcdougal     Opening for Greg is the choir from Pulaski Church of God (Bob White Blvd).  I haven't heard them but I understand they are terrific.  come join us.  www.pulaskitheatre.org

The next event is Feb. 21st.  We are presenting Beach, Blues and Soul.  Three bands will present an unforgettable evening of live music at the Pulaski Theatre. On a cold winters night, Magic Moments will bring back memories of warmer days with the beach music of summers past.  Representing the blues scene, Ellery and the Cream of the Crop Blues Band will offer a mixed bag of Texas Swing, Austin Shuffle, Virginia Twang, Georgia Soul and New Orleans Funk.  Classic soul and R&B sounds from the Traditions will round out this special evening of musical memories.
Tickets go on sale for this special event next week.  $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

Stay warm, stay safe.
Peace,
Jill

Dear PHS Friends,

I hope you all had a blessed Christmas and that the new year will be a "far site better than the last one"  (to quote Col. Potter from a MASH episode).

News is a little sparse right now.  The theatre is doing well....come join us for the sound of the big Band with the Old Pros this Sat night at 8.  Tickets may be purchased in advance at Coffee Buy the Book for $8 or $10 at the door.  We are in the process of working out the next series of events but just a quick save the date....Feb. 21.  None of you PHS grads are going to want to miss this show.   A great big thank you to all of you who have helped out with your donations.  We are still under construction (upstairs bathrooms are about to be finished...work starts next on the dressing rooms under the stage...and we are still trying to raise money for sound, lights and movie equipment).  Any help you can give is so appreciated.  Check the attached PHS challenge list to see which class is ahead.  Oh, and I still have DVD's available from the Multi-year reunion...only $5.00 each!  That money goes toward the theatre also.  www.pulaskitheatre.org

There is a new book out about Pulaski by Lloyd Matthews called Pulaski County, Virginia ~ An Historic & Descriptive Sketch, 1907-2007.  It can be purchased at the library for $15 soft cover or $30 hardcover.  It is a great companion book for the book Photos of Pulaski by John White.  You can get that for 19.99 at Coffee Buy the Book, Walgreens or even from Amazon.com.

The train station is going to be rebuilt like it was!!!!  Very good news!

Bill Anderson sent a page from a Pulaski High School yearbook....1929.  Bill writes:
Jill,

We have a copy of a 1929 PHS annual...Dianne's dad was a freshman that year, so this was his annual. I have several questions about the annual...one being whether annuals were printed through the 1920s and 1930s, and whether copies are available. I mentioned this to several of our classmates, and bobby Harrell said he has a copy of this one also. One of my favorite pictures was of a very attractive young teacher...Miss Laura Dalton. It is also interesting to see the colleges these teachers attended...one was a Wellesley College graduate. (Mrs. Earl Lange)

I'm attaching one picture I scanned...the girls basketball team.

The team coach was Carl Shufflebarger....many of us remember him from his working at the Southwest Times. A team member was Earle Crabtree.....later to become Mrs. Carl Shufflebarger. Their daughter (Carol) lives here in Kingsport and I learned from her that they later married after she graduated HS. Evidently Mrs. Shufflebarger was the team star...she scored 85 points in one game the year this was taken. (Safe to assume this was the game where the team won 112-17 vs. Radford.)

Bill

Check out the page/picture attached from the yearbook.  Can you imagine trying to play basketball with those knee pads on?  But aren't those ladies beautiful!

I heard from Steve Roseberry, one of Pulaski's musical shinning stars, from the Class of '65.  He can no longer sing but has got 2 of his CD's available if anyone would like them.
The first one is   "Steve Roseberry Sings with The London Symphony"
The second is    "Steve's Special Sounds", with a mixture of (13)
Christmas, gospel and secular numbers.
I have heard the first one and it is fantastic.  I am going to order the second one right now.  The price is $18 plus shipping and handling.  You can contact Steve at
                  <wehavetoday@myshorelink.com>

As usual we have suffered some losses with family members and also classmates.  Please keep in your prayers the family of Nancy Lovern Bolt, Class of '58 who died 12-24-08.  Also, from the Class of '62 Charles Edward Babb passed away.   Online condolences may be left at www.heritagefuneral.net
We also extend out sympathies to Leland King, Class of '67 on the death of his father, Stanley Russell King, 79 of Pulaski, VA January 1, 2009.  We also remember in our prayers the family of Mary Ella Mays Woolwine, 79, of Pulaski, VA  December 28, 2008.  Mrs. Woolwine is survived by Lynda, Class of '69, and Jon, Class of '74.

Check out the website for Coffee Buy the Book.  This great little coffee/bookstore is located in the old Martin's Pharmacy store next to the theatre.

I know you join me in praying for Peace and Prosperity for all in our world.

Name with color indicates it is recent donation and that is reflected in the color of the amount.
